Mackworth

Derbyshire

There is some suggestion that there may have been an 11th century Norman motte and

bailey castle here but evidence for it, has never been found.

The first owner seems to have been Henry du Mackworth who’s name appears in the Pipe Rolls of 1254.

Regarding the fortified manor house, which does not now exist, evidence suggests that it may have been a timber frame and rubble wall type of building which burnt down in the 17th century, during the Civil War.

What now remains is the facade of a 15th century, two storey gatehouse built of sandstone which led to to the courtyard of the fortified manor house.
