Kilpeck

Herefordshire

There is very little historical information on this castle other than, it was first built as a motte and bailey c.1090. Its earthen motte had a base diameter of about 50 metres surrounded by a ditch.

There are remains of walling in which there is evidence of a chimney flue of what is thought to have been a polygonal keep from a later period, standing on the 8 metre area atop of the motte.

King John stayed in this castle between 1211 and 1214.

The castle was abandoned in the 14th century.

During the Civil War it was garrisoned. Parliamentary troops eventually destroyed it at the end of hostilities.
