This once Fortified Gatehouse, called Mortimer’s Tower, gave access across a causeway to the Outer Court.

It was originally a square gate tower built c1120, when King Henry I granted the Castle to William de Clinton.

Two Drum Towers which flank the gate passage, were added c1215 when King John ordered

considerable building work to be done.
