Gwydir

Gwent - Wales

From a 14th century watch tower, built by Hywell Coetmor, Meredydd ap Ievan and his son John Wynn ap Meredydd rebuilt and enlarged it in the 15 century into a fortified manor house. At one time it had a secret priest-hole as the family were Catholic.

In 1924 the house was severely burnt and remained a ruin for twenty years.

The property was later bought by Arthur Clegg who had the house rebuilt stone by stone.

The castle changed hands in 1994 and is still privately owned,
