Dartmouth

Devon

Begun in 1388 by John Hawley, the privateering Mayor of Dartmouth, it is the earliest surviving example of a coastal fortress specifically built to carry guns.

It has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart estuary for 600 years and was in service throughout the First and Second World Wars.

The castle is now owned by English Heritage.
