Codnor

Derbyshire

William Peveril had a timber motte and bailey castle built here in the late 11th century

which was later rebuilt in stone.

In the 13th century the property passed to the Grey family. During this period the castle was enlarged and by the 15th century it was in the hands of the Zouche family.

Once a place of considerable size and importance by the late 17th and early 18th century it was in a

ruinous state, later to be quarried for building materials.
