Castle Acre

Norfolk

Originally a Roman fort stood here.

This castle was built in the 11th century by William de Warenne.

It was a motte and bailey structure with a horse shoe moat.  The stone shell keep we see today would probably have replaced the earlier timber tower in the 12th century.

The last of the Warennes died in 1347 leaving the castle to become a ruin.
