Cartington

Northumberland

In 1154 Ralph fitzMain held this site possibly as a border castle.

In the 13th century a stone tower was built but in 1421 when John Cartington held the property, he was granted a licence to crenelate which meant, improving the castle’s defences.

During the civil war it was partly slighted and a few years later,

the castle was quarried for building outhouses, walls and barns
