Roger Bigod 1st Earl of Norfolk built a motte and bailey castle on this site around 1100.

His son Hugh in 1165 went on to build a square keep of stone but the castle was destroyed

by King Henry II’s forces during the revolt of 1173 - 1174.

Circa 1294 Roger Bigod 5th Earl of Norfolk, restored the castle and probably was responsible for

building the two huge round gate towers we see today.
