This imposing fortified manor house was built against the threat of a French invasion and belonged to Sir Richard Scrope, Lord Chancellor to King Richard II.

Building work commenced in 1378 with John Lewyn as the probable Master Mason (architect) in charge of the work  which extended over a period of 18 years.

The building was ‘Slighted’ during the civil war.
